Film star and former professional dancer Paul Mercurio says he doesn't expect amputee Heather Mills to progress far into the US Dancing with the Stars competition.

Speaking to ninemsn, Mercurio said that while Mills might benefit from the sympathy vote for a little while, ultimately she would be judged on the quality of her dancing.

But the Strictly Ballroom star and Australian Dancing with the Stars judge said he thought Mills, who divorced Sir Paul McCartney last year, did well in her first outing on the show.

"I could see that her left leg was the false one, just watching her dance and the way it was choreographed," Mercurio said.
"The guy that choreographed it was smart and the foxtrot was a good choice for her."

But he thought Mills would have more trouble with her Latin routine in the second episode, due to screen on US television next week.

"The Latin stuff is going to pose a bigger problem. It's like the samba or the jive ‹ you've got to have that spring."

Mills scored 18 out of 30 with her performance on the US version of Dancing with the Stars last week.

She kicked with her false leg during her foxtrot and wore a sequined yellow-and-purple dress.

Dance Australia acting editor Jess Thomson also thought Mills performed well and said she found it difficult to tell which leg was false.

But she said Mills would have to pay more attention to her arms and become more relaxed in the shoulders if she wanted to progress further in the competition.

Mills will have to beat a ragtag assortment of former soap actors and ageing sport stars, as well the former king of the mullet haircut, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus.
