Adelaide Festival Centre presents Season 09
Thursday, 30 October 2008 Adelaide Festival Centre this week announced the festival will continue as it unveiled its year-long season of world-class theatre, dance and music. Season 09 features 10 Australian Premieresı and four performances Exclusive to Adelaideı, a stunningly diverse live performance program from around the globe including United Kingdom, United States, Tunisia, Spain, Canada, China, New Zealand, Africa and Australia. The Season 09 is part of the Festival Centreıs long term vision to revitalise and reposition the Festival Centre as the home of the performing arts and hub of creativity in South Australia. Over the past 24 months the Festival Centre has been working towards significantly increasing audiences through a program-led approach and has achieved a strong increase in audiences, a 35% increase in attendance figures over the last two years. CentreStage is a premier season of international theatre performance from around the world that engages, provokes, challenges and above all entertains audiences. Donıt miss the award winning comedy duo Ridiculusmus from the UK in their extraordinary version of The Importance of Being Earnest; from the makers of Krishnanıs Dairy, Indian Ink Theatre Company will perform The Candlestickmaker; Montrealıs Les 7 Doigts de la Main presents Traces a dazzling new style of acrobatic urban dance theatre and a co-production with State Theatre Company of one of Shakespeareıs greatest tragedies King Lear. Australian Stories features performances about the Australian way of life, and stories that explore political, social and human issues that question, challenge and create debate. 2009 sees three works including: Three Dog Night based on the award-winning Peter Goldsworthy novel of the same name, the inspiring coming of age story Page 8 by Company B and Windmill and Biig hARTıs production of Nyuntu Ngali (You We Too) by Scott Rankin. Pivot(al) is supporting excellence in presenting the best dance companies in the country alongside the best in the world. Whatever the style, the constant is the quality of the work. Pivot(al) takes you on a journey through a diverse range of dance that will delight, challenge, inspire and create debate - from the beautiful traditional to the new cutting edge choreography. The 2009 Pivot(al) element of the program is stronger than ever. Highlights of Pivot(al) include: The Australian Balletıs Firebird and other legends with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra; Complexions contemporary ballet from the US; Londonıs new dance star Rafael Bonachela in Sydney Dance Companyıs commissioned work 360°; Noche Flamenca in association with Arts Projects Austria and Maggie Gerrand; Australian Dance Theatreıs acclaimed international ensemble of dance in Garry Stewartıs full production of G and after the success of Akram Khanıs intimate duet with Sylvie Guillem in Sacred Monsters we are thrilled to have Akramıs company perform on the Festival Theatre stage in 2009 in bahok. In addition to the Festival Centreıs year long festival, the Adelaide Festival Centre will present its ninth annual Adelaide Cabaret Festival from 5 20 June under the new Artistic Directorship of Adelaide born David Campbell, whose international reputation will further enhance the festival, nationally and internationally. The third annual International Guitar Festival from late November will once again present an enviable line-up of international guitar greats and the third annual OzAsia Festival from 3 - 17 October will showcase Australiaıs cultural relationship with our Asian neighbours. In 2009 the Beethoven Festival featuring the Australian Youth Orchestra will reunite Grammy-award winning conductor John Nelson and international piano sensation Herbert Schuch to complete the Beethoven Cycle of Symphonies and Piano Concertos. The Centre continues to work with South Australiaıs home companies and major presenters: Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Australian Dance Theatre, Brink Productions, Leigh Warren & Dancers, State Opera of South Australia, State Theatre Company of South Australian, The Australian Ballet and Windmill Performing Arts.
